World Championships 2002 Report 1, Saturday 27th of April 2002
The Saturday started with some reverses, first one member of my Crew, Astrid van Batavia, has to de-lete her volunteer because of private circumstances, so I've had to arrange for transport immediately! And second we were very late into the city of Leusden, because we've lost each other on the highway near Oosterbeek! Peter and I had an official-car for hiring and in it a lot of recording and play back equipments from Theo; large loud-speakers and a mixed-equipment! So we couldn't drive too hard on the highway and near the city of Amersfoort we've missed the boards of Leusden! And about more than half an hour we arrived on 15.00 hour in De Korf (Eventhall in the city of Leusden). Our PC-hall was standing right behind in the big Recreation-room where about 60 Pinball-machines were standing!
After first giving my Crew the necessary instructions, we started with build up our PC-Pinball event. Two long tables for the competition computers and one table for my Crew, but first I was looking for Jurgen van de Peppel, organizer of Dutch Pinball Open (DPO), asking him for the beamer and the big screen for our PC-Pinball event! But fortunately Frank, secretary Dutch Pinball Association, had a good eye to help us with our options! The 6 present computers were installed very fastly by Otto, and Theo had adapted the sound correctly, not too hard and not too low! We had to reserve the needed volumes just only for the Big Final, on Sunday next, but today was only a day for practising and training for the competitors. The PC-Pinballgames this year were collected carefully by the Matchleader, knowing as :
The first four games were the competiton-games, the other ones were only for the recreations! This year there was even a Sub-game to play, for ecu 2,50 you could play a real Pinball-game on the computer and a very popular one: "Medieval Madness". On a big screen everyone could play the "MM" on a very visual way and you could even win a lot of nice prices! But unfortunately there was nobody to play on, maybe the people were afraid for the amount to pay for! There were also a lot of people who had to play the Visual Pinball from PinMame for free with a new simulator-box made by Gerard Heijmen (Den Haag), we called "PC-Pinball Simulator 2002". This invention of Gerard Heijmen was a combination of a gamepad and the "Virtual Pinball" from Philips, but just more compacter, so you didn't have to use the keyboard of your computer! My Crew and I were very enthusiast about this new invention, but we had to make a big attention; you've had to use the last update-version of Visual Pinball/PinMame and played on a fast computer with a video-memory for at least 32 MB and playing under Windows 98. A lot of nice games were playing with the "PC-Pinball Simulator 2002", like The Addams Family 1 & Gold, Monster Bash, Twilight Zone and many many more! At 18.00 hour you could practising the games and the DPO-competitors who also played for the PC-Pinball competition may had to play their PC-games!
A lot of youth and ladies were present on the PC-Pinball event, a lot of them wrote their names on the highscore, mostly on the game Creep Night, again the famous names! On Big Race USA (BRUSA) you could play the keyboard of the computer and the "Virtual Pinball" from Philips, the choice was up to you! The Recreation-hall was lighted over, just a pity, because of the special-effects on the big screen! That night I've met my internet-relation, Joris van Liempd, the creator of the PC-Pinballgame "7th Hea-ven" on my website "PC-Pinball Rubriek". Around 22.15 hour we finished this first day, a lot of com- petitors had been practising the whole evening and they were ready for the Sunday! But most of them were pretty tiredly and they started to yawn, even behind the real Pinball-machines they were stagge-ring... time to sleep, I guess! At 22.30 hour we'd put of the equipments and computers of our Pinball hall and after closing I was playing a lot of Pinball-machines, like Twilight Zone (TZ), The Shadow,Revenge from Mars (RFM), Cirqus Voltaire, Jack Bot, NBA Fastbreak, Medieval Madness (MM) and lots of more! About 23.30 hour we went to our Hotel "De Roskam" in a little village Achterveld, about 10 km. from the city of Leusden, and most of our Crew felt asleep! Only Theo and I were talking about some points of attention and looking forward to the PC-Pinball for the next year! The lights went out on 2.30 hour at last, the first day was just a day full of turbulent and lots of unexpected situations... but at last very nicely to me!!!
I waked up very early, as the first one, at 7.00 hour! The clockradio didn't work at all, because the music was playing the whole night long! After a quick shower-bath and waking up the Crew, we went below for breakfast, the service was just perfectly in the hotel "De Roskam". About 9.00 hour we drove to De Korf in the city of Leusden, it was rather quiet in there, while we put on the equipments and the computers. Around 10.00 hour we became 3 more computers, so totally we'd got 10 compu- ters and 2 laptops (including 1 laptop for the index-scores). I asked the manager of the Recreation-room if he wanted to dim the lights (and he did!), so we became a much better effects for the big screen! After a little delay we could start the Officially Opening by the Matchleader, first he thanked his PC-Pinball Crew and wished all the competitors lots of success! There was still an opportunity to play the Sub-game Medieval Madness on a big screen, till 14.00 hour, and you could win a lot of nice prices on it! The competitors started their Pinball-games with full enthusiasm, mostly of the games they'd chosen by themselves (including the recreation-games) by way of my website "PC-Pinball Rubriek" :
About 12.00 hour we allready could admire nice scores by Big Race USA, mostly by the men, and Marcel de Wit (Oosterbeek) put a sublime score of 87.428.490 points and left the others far away from him! Each game you could play double, the highest score counted, and you may not Buy a new ball and not chose Retrying! On Fantastic Journey, Peter Hutjes (Velp) was the best with his giant score of 323.643.380 points, only Giorgio Lapian (Arnhem) was to be allowed to come near with 144.767.020 points! Henk Brakels (Emmen) left his personally visitcard on Creep Night with an incredible score of 765.474.000 points, as you see our first Champion PC-Pinball 2000 held in Numansdorp, was surely not be an ephemeron! The competitions were very exciting this year, the difference of the points was very close and most by the number 1 and 2 by each category! At 14.45 hour the Matchleader could see the endresults via the Account-committee, this year new names on the numbers 1 for the Big Final:
For the time being we prepared our PC-Pinball event for the Big Final, the beamer was put on its sharp and the 6 big loud-speakers were tested to a cultivated volume! The final-game, "Addiction Worms", was well-considered, this game was a subtle one with unexpected effects, nice to play including the Digital Sounds-effects with Ultra Dolby Surround-Sounds, just an ultimate caress for the ears! The 3 finalists could practising for 5 - 10 minutes, and the Matchleader asked the youngest finalist (Giorgio) if he wanted to start first òr last, he chosed to start last! And then asked the only woman (Sara) to chose for starting, she prefered for starting first... so she have had it at once!!!
